How do I resize an image to a specific size in KB?

Quick answer

Choose your photo, type the maximum size in KB (for example 50), and press Resize. The tool tries JPEG quality levels and, if needed, slightly smaller dimensions until the file is just under your limit, so you keep as much detail as the budget allows. If a form also has a minimum (such as 20–50 KB), enter it too and the file will land inside the range.

  1. Choose or drop your photo (JPG, PNG or WEBP).
  2. Pick a preset or type the max size in KB, plus a minimum if the form has one.
  3. Press Resize and download the JPG.

Where people use it

Why forms ask for a size in KB

Application portals store millions of photos, so they cap each upload. A phone camera photo is usually 2–6 MB, which is 40 to 120 times bigger than a typical 50 KB limit. Simply cropping does not help much; what shrinks a JPG is a mix of lower JPEG quality and fewer pixels.

This tool balances the two. It keeps the original dimensions while it can and lowers quality first, then reduces the pixel size step by step only when quality would otherwise become blocky. For a face photo, 50 KB at around 600 px wide still looks sharp on screen and in print at passport size.

Common KB limits in India

UseTypical limit
Exam photo (SSC, IBPS, state PSCs)20–50 KB
Exam signature10–20 KB
PAN application photo (NSDL)up to 20 KB
Job portals, scholarships50–200 KB
Document scans (marksheets, certificates)100–500 KB

Limits change between notifications, so always check the instructions of the form you are filling.

When the file comes out smaller than the minimum

Some portals reject a photo that is too small, for example under 20 KB. If your image compresses below the minimum you entered, the tool adds harmless padding inside the JPEG file so it reaches the minimum size. The picture itself does not change, and the file opens normally everywhere.

Increase image size in KB

Some forms reject a photo for being too small, for example "minimum 20 KB" or "between 50 and 100 KB". Type the minimum in Min size (or tap Increase to 50 KB / Increase to 100 KB) and press Resize. The tool first keeps more pixels and a higher JPEG quality; if the picture still comes out smaller, it adds empty padding bytes inside the JPEG so the file reaches the minimum. The picture itself is unchanged, and the file opens normally in every app and portal.

Checking a photo's size in KB

The tool shows each file's size as soon as you choose it, and the new size next to the download button. On Android, a file manager or the photo's Details screen shows the size; on iPhone, the Files app's Info view does. 1 KB here means 1,024 bytes, the way Windows and most forms count it.

Resize Image in KB FAQs

How do I reduce photo size in KB without losing quality?

Some quality loss is unavoidable when a 3 MB photo must become 50 KB, but you can keep it invisible. Let the tool lower the pixel size as well as the JPEG quality, crop away empty background first, and avoid going below about 400 px wide for a face photo.

Can I resize an image to exactly 50 KB?

File sizes move in small steps, so the result will be just under the number you type, usually within 1–3 KB of it. If a portal needs a range, such as 20–50 KB, enter both values.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes. It runs in Chrome, Safari and other mobile browsers, and you can pick a photo straight from your gallery.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The resizing happens inside your browser with the canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why it also works offline once the page has loaded.

How do I increase image size in KB?

Type the minimum size in Min size (or tap Increase to 50 KB) and press Resize. The file will be at least that size, with the picture unchanged.

Why does my form say the file is too small?

The portal has a minimum file size. Set the same minimum here and resize; the result meets both the minimum and the maximum.

How do I reduce image size in KB without losing quality?

Crop to the subject first and let the tool lower JPEG quality before it shrinks the pixels; at 50 KB or more the change is hard to see.

Can I resize many photos to the same KB at once?

Yes. Select several images and each one is resized to the same target; download them one by one.
