What size should the PAN card photo be?

Quick answer

NSDL (Protean) instructions for online PAN applications ask for a colour photo of 3.5 × 2.5 cm scanned at 200 DPI, up to 20 KB, and a signature of 2 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI, up to 10 KB, both as JPG. The first two presets above produce exactly those files: 197×276 px for the photo and 354×157 px for the signature, with 200 DPI written into the file.

  1. Choose a front-facing photo with a light background and pick the PAN photo preset.
  2. Press Resize and download the photo JPG.
  3. Choose your signature photo, switch to the PAN signature preset and resize again.

Uploading the documents as a PDF?

The PAN form also asks for proof of identity, address and date of birth as a PDF, usually up to 300 KB. Use the PAN card PDF maker to combine photos of your documents into one PDF of the right size.

NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL: which photo size?

PAN applications go through two agencies, and you will see two sets of numbers online:

NSDL / Protean instructionsOften quoted for UTIITSL
Photo3.5 × 2.5 cm, 200 DPI, up to 20 KB213 × 213 px, 300 DPI, up to 30 KB
Signature2 × 4.5 cm, 200 DPI, up to 10 KB400 × 200 px, 300 DPI, up to 30 KB

The NSDL figures come from Protean's own instruction page. The UTIITSL pixel sizes are what many resizer tools quote; we could not find them in an official UTIITSL document. The upload screen always shows the current limit, so match that. Presets for both are in the tool above.

PAN Card Photo Resize FAQs

What is the pixel size of a PAN card photo?

At 200 DPI, 3.5 × 2.5 cm is about 276 px tall and 197 px wide. The PAN photo preset sets these numbers for you.

Can I use a selfie?

Use a recent front-facing photo with a plain, light background, no cap or sunglasses, and your face filling most of the frame. A well-lit selfie taken at arm's length can work; crop it so your head and shoulders fill the frame.

My signature photo is grey. Will it be accepted?

The signature preset turns the paper pure white and darkens the ink slightly, which gives the clean look portals expect.

Is this the official PAN website?

No. This is an independent free tool that prepares your files. Submit your application only on the official Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL portal.

What is the PAN card photo size in KB?

NSDL (Protean) instructions allow up to 20 KB for the photo and 10 KB for the signature. Tools often quote up to 30 KB for UTIITSL. Check the limit shown on the upload page you are using.

What is the pixel size of a UTIITSL PAN photo?

Many tools quote 213 × 213 pixels at 300 DPI. Use the UTI photo preset, and confirm the size on the UTIITSL upload screen.

Can I use the same photo for NSDL and UTIITSL?

Use the same original photo, but resize it separately with the preset for the portal you are applying on, because the sizes differ.

Why is my PAN photo rejected?

Usually the file is over the KB limit, the wrong pixel size, or the face is too small or dark. Resize with the matching preset and retake the photo in good light against a plain wall.
