How do I reduce a PDF to 1 MB?

Quick answer

Choose your PDF, keep the 1 MB target and press Compress. The tool re-renders each page as an optimised image and tries resolutions and JPEG quality levels until the whole PDF fits under 1 MB. The page size and order stay the same. It works best for scanned documents, photos of documents and certificates.

  1. Choose or drop your PDF.
  2. Keep 1 MB selected, or pick another target size.
  3. Press Compress and download the smaller PDF.

What fits in 1 MB

1 MB comfortably holds five to ten scanned pages at print quality. It is a typical limit for university admissions, visa appointment portals and email attachments on older systems.

How the compression works

Scanned PDFs are big because each page is a high-resolution photo. The tool renders every page, then saves it again at the lowest resolution and JPEG quality that still fits your target, preferring a slightly lower resolution over blocky JPEG artefacts. The new PDF keeps the original page sizes, so it prints the same.

Because pages are rebuilt as images, text in the compressed PDF can no longer be selected or searched. For typed documents that are already small, upload the original instead; the tool tells you when a file is already under the target.

If it still will not fit

From 10 MB (or 50 MB) down to 1 MB

A 10-page phone scan is often 8–15 MB because every page is a full-resolution photo; 1 MB is plenty for those ten pages at a clear, printable quality. The tool works page by page on your device, so a very large file (50 MB or a 100-page scan) needs a few minutes and a fair amount of phone memory. If your browser struggles, split the file into two or three parts with Split PDF, compress each, and upload them separately if the portal allows it.

1 MB, 2 MB or email?

1 MB is a common limit on admission and visa appointment portals and older office email systems. Some portals allow 2 MB, which leaves room for colour: tap the 2 MB chip above the button. Gmail and Outlook accept much larger attachments (around 20–25 MB), so for email you rarely need 1 MB; compressing still makes the message faster to send and open on mobile data.

Compress PDF to 1MB FAQs

How can I compress a PDF to 1 MB on my phone?

Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap Choose PDF, pick the file from Downloads or WhatsApp documents, and press Compress. The 1 MB PDF is saved back to your phone.

Will the text stay readable?

For one to three pages at 200 KB or more, yes. With very small targets or many pages, choose black & white to keep text crisp instead of lowering resolution further.

Is there a page limit?

No fixed limit. Very long PDFs (50+ pages) take longer on older phones because every page is rendered on your device.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and compressed inside your browser using pdf.js and jsPDF. Nothing is sent to a server.

How can I reduce a PDF from 10 MB to 1 MB?

Choose the PDF, keep the 1 MB target and press Compress. Scanned pages are re-saved at a lower resolution until the whole file is under 1 MB.

Can I compress a PDF to 2 MB instead?

Yes. Tap the 2 MB chip, or type any size in KB (for example 1500 for 1.5 MB).

Will a 1 MB PDF print well?

For up to about ten scanned pages, yes: text and stamps stay sharp at normal print size. Page sizes are unchanged.

What if the PDF is 50 MB or more?

It still works, but it takes longer and uses more memory. On an older phone, split it into parts first and compress each part.
